We finished our second week of first grade with a bang! We had a practice Religion test, and a practice spelling test. I was so impressed with how well the kids did on both! They are really learning the ropes of first grade so well!!
We have finished our author study of Tomie de Paola, and we all loved him! We like how he writes about his real family and things that happened to him growing up; AND, how he also writes about made up stories. His book, "The Popcorn book" is a made up story that came to him while he was eating a big bowl of popcorn. Ask your child which Tomie de Paola book was their favorite! They are sure to have a favorite character. (mine is Big Anthony) Visit Tomie's website at www.tomie.com
Our next author study will be over Eric Carle. We will begin by visiting his website on Monday. You can visit his website at www.eric-carle.com !

Reading We are working on learning how to work in our centers. I am using this time to complete a Developmental Reading Assessment on each child. This test will show me where I need to start working with the children in reading groups.
Writing We will work on adding details to our ideas. We learned how ideas are like doors- some of them open up to another door…..but some of them open up to something beautiful and exciting!
Math-We will be learning how to read information from graphs.
Religion-We will be learning how God sent His Son to us; how to make the sign of the cross; and, how there are 3 persons in one God. (the Blessed Trinity)
Things of Note:
** I do not mind the girls wearing necklaces; but, if the girls begin to play with their necklace more than they are wearing it, I will have them put it into their backpacks. The same goes with hair accessories.
**Please try to send items in your child’s lunchbox that they are able to open. I will always help them when they have tried and cannot open it; but some items are extremely difficult for the children to open. (some examples are fruit cups and gogurt tubes) Our lunch period is not very long, so if a lot of time is spent on opening items, none of us get much time to eat.
Reading Reviews are due on Friday!
We will have our first spelling test next Friday, September 4.
Remember: if you arrive at school after the crossing guards have gone in, you must go to the office for a tardy slip.
