Assessments and Math FUN

This week, I will be finishing up the assessments for reading. The assessment I am using is called the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA). Your child may tell you that they came and read a book alone with me. I use this assessment to help me group the kids into reading groups. I am so impressed so far with every one's reading!! It is very exciting!

Today was not all about assessment. We had some fun with the Smartboard during math. We used virtual dice on the Smartboard. We took turns making the dice "roll" by touching them, and then made an addition problem on our dry erase boards. It was a great time, and I noticed just how fast the kids were getting at adding! Everyone really enjoyed it! (I don't think they thought they were really working....)
We also discussed how the rain we are receiving is from Gustav. Their reactions were cute- some of them thought we would have an actual hurricane here, and I heard some "whews" when they heard how Gustav is just becoming a "low" while it moves over our state.
I can't wait to finish the reading assessments and start reading groups. Teaching reading is definitely my most favorite thing about teaching first grade-- although math ran a close second today!
